Reaching Muslims with the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Few areas of Christian ministry are surrounded by as much uncertainty and hesitation as sharing the Gospel with Muslims. Many Christians genuinely desire to make Christ known, yet feel unprepared when speaking with a Muslim friend, neighbour or work colleague. What should I say? What do Muslims actually believe? How can I explain the Trinity, the Sonship of Jesus, the cross and salvation by grace without immediately creating an argument? How can I remain faithful to the Gospel while treating the person before me with dignity, patience and genuine love?

From Islam to Immanuel has been developed to help answer these questions. It is not simply a course about Islam, nor is its purpose to equip Christians to win religious arguments. Its central concern is people. It prepares believers to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ clearly, biblically, prayerfully and respectfully to Muslims, with the hope that they may come to know Immanuel—“God with us.”

The course begins with the biblical picture of spiritual harvest. Jesus told His disciples to lift up their eyes and look at the fields because they were ready for harvest. That picture provides the foundation for this study. Muslims are not presented merely as followers of another religion, but as people whom Christians are called to see through the eyes of God’s compassion. The course challenges fear, prejudice and inactivity and asks a practical question: if God has placed Muslim people within our communities, workplaces and neighbourhoods, how should we respond?

An important part of that response is  understanding.  Effective Christian witness requires more than enthusiasm; it requires a willingness to listen and learn. The course introduces the basic beliefs and practices of Islam, including its understanding of God, the prophets, Scripture, judgment, predestination and the Five Pillars. It also considers Muhammad, the Quran, the Hadith, major divisions within Islam, and the importance of family, community, honour and religious identity. The purpose is not merely to accumulate information, but to help Christians engage in thoughtful and meaningful conversation.

From there, the course becomes strongly practical. Students are encouraged to pray for Muslims, build genuine friendships, demonstrate the love of Christ, ask good questions, listen carefully and offer practical help. You will discover why an argument may close a door that friendship could keep open, and why the goal is never simply to defeat another person's position. Christian witness should communicate truth with humility, wisdom and the right spirit.

The course also prepares students for questions and objections that commonly arise in Muslim-Christian conversations. Particular attention is given to the authority and reliability of the Bible and to central Christian teachings that Muslims may misunderstand or reject. These include the Trinity, the person and work of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, humanity and sin, salvation, judgment and eternity. Throughout the study, the student is continually directed back to Scripture as the foundation for explaining Christian faith.

A distinctive feature of this course is its emphasis upon spiritual as well as intellectual preparation.  Prayer is not presented as an optional extra but as the starting point for ministry. The study also explores the work of the Holy Spirit, divine revelation and the power of God in Christian witness. Students are reminded that conversion is not simply the result of superior information or constructing the perfect argument. Christians may plant and water, but ultimately God gives the increase.

The course also explores useful bridges for communicating the Gospel. Abraham, honoured within Islam, becomes an important point of conversation as the student considers the biblical meaning of Abraham's faith. Cultural understanding, friendship, Christian character, compassion, answered prayer and a clear explanation of God's grace can all provide opportunities for deeper spiritual discussion.

For the adult student, this course is designed to move beyond theory. It will challenge what you know, how you think, how you pray and how you relate to Muslim people. You do not need to become an Islamic scholar before you can begin. You do need a working understanding of what Muslims believe, a growing knowledge of Scripture, a willingness to listen and a heart that desires to represent Jesus Christ faithfully.

Perhaps one of the most important lessons of From Islam to Immanuel is that Muslim outreach should begin neither with fear nor controversy, but with compassion, prayer and the Gospel. Muslims should never be treated simply as projects, opponents or statistics. They are people with families, hopes, fears, questions and deeply held beliefs—people to whom Christians are called to demonstrate the love of Christ and bear faithful witness to the truth of the Gospel.

As you work through this course, you will become better prepared to approach Muslim friends and acquaintances with understanding and confidence. You will learn how to begin conversations, respond to difficult questions, explain essential Christian truths and keep the focus where it ultimately belongs—on Jesus Christ.

The harvest may be much closer than you think. It may be across the world, across the street, at work, in a local shop or within your own community. This course invites you to lift up your eyes, recognise the opportunity, and become equipped to share the hope of the Gospel with wisdom, courage, compassion and love.
