This unit, CHCCCS016 Respond to client needs, focuses on developing the skills and knowledge necessary to respond empathetically and comprehensively to the needs of congregants within a church ministry setting. In the context of church ministry, individuals seeking support may be facing a diverse range of issues that extend beyond the immediate area of expertise or focus of the ministry and its workers.

The aim of this unit is to equip workers in church ministry with the ability to provide person-centered support to congregants. This means recognizing that individuals have unique and complex needs that require a holistic approach to address effectively. By embodying a person-centered approach, workers can ensure that the support they provide takes into account the individual’s spiritual, emotional, and practical needs.

By completing this unit, workers in church ministry will enhance their ability to provide compassionate and comprehensive support to congregants, fostering a sense of belonging, care, and growth within the church community.

By completing this unit, workers in church ministry will enhance their ability to provide compassionate and comprehensive support to congregants, fostering a sense of belonging, care, and growth within the church community.

Respond to client needs Performance Criteria

This course, Plan and Conduct Group Activities will develop the skills you will require to plan significant events taking the issues below into account in your planning.   Satisfies CHCGRP002 - Plan and Conduct Group Activities  Listed below are the skills you will develop in this course:

1. Establish an interpersonal relationship with the client
2. Identify the range of issues impacting on the client
3. Analyse information to determine course of action
4. Refer client to other services to provide additional support

Respond to client needs Required Knowledge

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

  1. legal and ethical considerations for working with clients and how these are applied in an organisation and individual practice, including:
    1. duty of care
    2. dignity of risk
    3. human rights
    4. discrimination
    5. mandatory reporting
    6. privacy, confidentiality and disclosure
    7. work role boundaries – responsibilities and limitations
    8. work health and safety
  2. organisation policies and procedures for:
    1. responding to indicators of actual or potential risk of abuse, neglect or harm
    2. collecting and analysing client information
    3. transitioning or exiting a client from the service
    4. identification of the impact of, and interrelationships between issues relating to:
    5. physical health
    6. mental health
    7. child protection
    8. domestic violence
    9. disability
    10. homelessness
    11. unemployment
    12. financial
    13. alcohol and other drugs (AOD)
    14. trauma
    15. culture and religion
  3. organisation requirements and referral options for working with people experiencing issues related to:
    1. physical health
    2. mental health
    3. child protection
    4. domestic violence
    5. disability
    6. homelessness
    7. unemployment
    8. AOD
    9. trauma

Respond to client needs Assessment Conditions

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has responded holistically to the needs of at least 5 clients

There are two options to complete the practical theology units.

1. Through our “Online Training Portal”. The portal provides students with a comprehensive and interactive learning and training program. Various assignments are presented to teach and determine competency in the units required. Detailed instructions and access are provided to students by VIC as they enter into the subject.  A preview of the Vision Colleges Online Training Portal is available to students and prospective students at the Online Portal Student Guide.

2. If a unit is not available online, or if a student cannot access the internet or is uncomfortable with online learning, the unit is available in hard copy as a workbook with written assignments.

Students may request alternative Ministry Skills units.  For a list of alternative options, contact the Principal at Vision Colleges.

It is helpful, but not required, for a student to be involved in a local church or community-based program under qualified leadership and document their work experience completed for each unit to assist in establishing competencies.
